Irises
Van Gogh painted this still life while in the psychiatric hospital at Saint-Remy-de-Provence. The composition reflects a study of color and how they can create powerful contrasts; he placed purple flowers against a bright yellow background to help the organic forms stand out. While these irises look blue today, they were originally purple, and the red pigments have since faded.
