Church and Horse
In Coville’s 1964 work Church and Horse, one can see his interest in natural and manmade binaries thoroughly at work. As the horse gallops forward, mane blowing in the wind, he is framed in the foreground by a man-made symbol of restriction–the fence. Its slightly off frame, an ajar gate leaves the viewer contemplating outcomes: does the horse escape and run free, or halt at the fence’s border? The presence of the church is another manmade structure with which Colville juxtaposes the untamed freedom of the horse.
